Trewithen’s Allotment

What have we been up to?

Since Winter, the Trewithen Garden’s team have been extremely busy developing the entrance area. We have added a lovely new winding path that leads you on a journey to the garden and as part of this development, we have also decided to improve the allotment.

We started off by removing the previous vegetable beds, flattening the ground and adjusting the height of the perimeter fence. A rough plan was drawn and we started to draw out the new beds. In the meantime, we started growing some of the seeds so that they’d be ready to go out once the allotment had finished. We filled the beds with tonnes of well-rotted farmyard manure and top soil to ensure there were plenty of nutrients for the plants to use.

Now that the beds were filled, we started to make a frame for sweet peas and runner beans to grow up. The combination of the two serves multiple benefits. The bees are encouraged to pollinate the runnner beans while they visit the sweet peas and having them both grow in the same space, means that no space is wasted. We also made a frame for the raspberries to grow up and another frame for the peas.

There’s such a range of things growing in the allotment - even a cut flower bed! We are currently growing pumpkins, squash, courgettes, cucumbers, raspberries, strawberries, runner beans, french beans, peas, red and black currents, gooseberries, rhubarb, leek, raddish, lettuce, carrots, shallots, onions, garlic and much more!
