Tales woven in time

Trewithen House’s exquisite interiors, and its masterpieces, best tell its stories. From tales and records of Cornwall to far further afield treasured in the library, to intricate Rococo plasterwork in the Great Saloon, which gives a glimpse of eighteenth century craftmanship. The main staircase, set within a semi-circular open well, is a fine example of Thomas Edwards’ architecture. The mind drifts when bathed in sunlight which cascades from this skylight, much like how the calming atmosphere and deep scents of the Oak Room evoke times gone by.

Architectural Legacy

Constructed in 1723 by London-based architect Thomas Edwards, Trewithen House stands as a testament to Palladian design, characterised by its classical symmetry and elegance. It is one of Cornwall’s finest examples of Grade I Palladian architecture from the eighteenth century. A time when symmetry and proportion ruled British design hand in hand with the grandeur of neoclassicism. Built from Pentewan granite, the house's façade has gracefully aged, now adorned with a natural pink-hued lichen that enhances its historic charm.

The estate was acquired by Phillip Hawkins in 1715, and the house has since remained under the stewardship of this family for over 250 years. In recent years, Sam and Kitty Galsworthy have undertaken thoughtful renovations of Trewithen House, and the interior design is artful, elegantly balancing heritage and modern family life.

Make a day of it

The 2025 tour season commenced at the end of April, and will continue every Sunday to Tuesday until July 1st, with an additional opening on August Bank Holiday Monday. These are led at 12.15pm, 1.30pm and 2.45pm, priced at £15 per adult. Tickets are available online, as well as from the ticket office. Only 10 minutes from Truro and 15 minutes from St Austell, a Trewithen house tour makes for an interesting day out in Cornwall in nice weather, equally as a rainy day activity. The Tea Shed serves cream teas, homemade lunches, coffees and cake, and the gardens are also just waiting to be explored...
